Sleep Apnea Testing for Commercial Drivers
Obesity is the most common indicator of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), a disorder which causes daytime sleepiness. According to the Department of Transportation (DOT), each year tens of thousands of motor vehicle accidents and thousands of related fatalities are attributed to sleep apnea. That is why the DOT wants obese commercial drivers with a Body Mass Index (BMI) ≥ 35 and neck size ≥ 17 inches to test for OSA and use CPAP therapy if they test positive for OSA . Step 1 - Check your Body Mass Index To check if your BMI is ≥ 35, enter the Height and Weight in the BMI Calculator on the right. This is provided by the Center for Disease Control. If your BMI is less than 35, then your DOT examiner may not ask you to take a sleep test for sleep apnea If your BMI is greater than or equal to 35 then you should proceed to Step 2. Step 2: Choose a Test OPTION 1: Not sure if you have OSA: Take the Verified Home Sleep Test OPTION 2: Believe you may have OSA: Take the $99 SLEEP TEST, start CPAP therapy Step 3: Send Negative Results, or Start CPAP Therapy • If you test “Negative” on the Verified HST, then renew your DOT Health Exam Card • If you test “Positive” then start Auto CPAP therapy and prove successful compliance Click here for Verified Home Sleep Test Click here for $99 Sleep Screening |
